Jaafar Elmirghani, one of the 3 Co-Chairs for the IEEE Green ICT Initiative, has published an interesting article for the Intelligent Utility Magazine that discusses how the Internet of Things Impacts ICT and Green ICT Efforts.
It talks about developments from healthcare and manufacturing to smart cities, smart agriculture and other areas and presents challenges, particularly in how IoT’s rise will further challenge our efforts to “green” – or make more sustainable – information and communication technology (ICT).
COP 22 in Marrakesh: Green ICT to be highlighted as a key tool against climate change.

The 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 22) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is scheduled to take place from 7-18 November 2016. As part of the COP-22 in Marrakesh, a Low Emissions Solutions Conference will highlight the key role ICT can play to both mitigate greenhouse gas emission and help the world adapt to climate change.
Significant progress on Standards and synergy with other initiatives

In the October 2016 IEEE Communications Magazine, the President’s Page states that “ComSoc is leading the IEEE Initiative on Green Information and Communication Technologies (Green ICT) and the IEEE Standards Association is helping to support this initiative. To start with, we have had two very successful Rapid Reaction Standardization Activities on this topic, one in the UK last November, and one in Chicago this past June.
The Green ICT Initiative at ISTAS 2016

The Green ICT Initiative participated in the 2016 International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS), which was held on October 21-22, 2016 in Trivandrum, state of Kerala, India. The initiative co-Chairs, Charles Despins (pictured below at ISTAS) and Jaafar Elmirgani joined a panel session on Sustainable Technologies and Development.

Bill Ash (left) is the Strategic Technology Program Director for IEEE-SA. He received his BSEE from Rutgers University School of the Engineering. His background is in the RF industry as he worked as applications engineer on wireless communications systems. Bill has been with the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) for over 12 years working with standards development groups covering technologies such as RF emissions, distributive generation and the National Electrical Safety Code®.
IEEE Talks Big Data: Cicek Cavdar & Burak Kantarci

Dr. Cicek Cavdar and Dr. Burak Kantarci are both active in the IEEE Green ICT Initiative, which is driven, in part, by the advent of big data. Cavdar was coordinator of the project 5GrEEn: Towards Green 5G Mobile Network, now Swedish cluster coordinator of the project SooGREEN – Service Oriented Optimization of Green Mobile Networks, and a senior researcher in the Communications Systems Department at the School of ICT at KTH, the Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden.
Leeds Communications Networks research team wins the 2016 Premium Award for best paper in IET Optoelectronics

The Communication Networks research team in the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, has won the prestigious IET 2016 Premium Award for Best Paper in IET Optoelectronics. Their paper ‘Green optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing networks’ was rated the best paper published over the past 2 years in the renowned IET Optoelectronics. This underpins the work of the proposed standards working group.
