The Green ICT Initiative at ISTAS 2016

The Green ICT Initiative participated in the 2016 International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS), which was held on October 21-22, 2016 in Trivandrum, state of Kerala, India. The initiative co-Chairs, Charles Despins (pictured below at ISTAS) and Jaafar Elmirgani joined a panel session on Sustainable Technologies and Development.

After describing the initiative’s mission and current activities with respect to publications, outreach and standards development, Charles Despins emphasized the need for concrete dialogue between the technology and policy communities in order to achieve sustainability in our increasingly connected world. The lack of recognition, in the climate change community, of the key role ICT can play in achieving a low-carbon future and in adapting to climate change, was cited as an example. Participating remotely, Jaafar Elmighani detailed the opportunities for “Greening ICT” itself and also “Greening through ICT” various vertical application sectors. Landmark work and opportunities with respect to both energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emission mitigation were also addressed.

ISTAS is the annual flagship event of the IEEE Social Implications of Technology Society (SSIT). As the concept of sustainability relies on a triple bottom line of economic, social and environmental benefits, SSIT brings, within IEEE, a unique complement to the Green ICT initiative.
