IEEE SSIT collaborates with the Green ICT Initiative

The Green ICT Initiative seeks to “build a holistic approach to sustainability by incorporating green metrics in all IEEE technical domains” by bringing together various IEEE Societies and other FDC initiatives and encouraging them to showcase “green” facets of their activities.

Charles Despins, one of the 3 Co-Chairs for the IEEE Green ICT Initiative, has published an interesting article for the Intelligent Utility Magazine that examines one of the great challenges of the 21st century: Addressing energy efficiency, carbon footprint and life cycle management of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), which currently are on an unsustainable path.

How the Internet of Things Impacts ICT and Green ICT Efforts

Jaafar Elmirghani, one of the 3 Co-Chairs for the IEEE Green ICT Initiative, has published an interesting article for the Intelligent Utility Magazine that discusses how the Internet of Things Impacts ICT and Green ICT Efforts. 
 
It talks about developments from healthcare and manufacturing to smart cities, smart agriculture and other areas and presents challenges, particularly in how IoT’s rise will further challenge our efforts to “green” – or make more sustainable – information and communication technology (ICT).

COP 22 in Marrakesh: Green ICT to be highlighted as a key tool against climate change.

The 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 22) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is scheduled to take place from 7-18 November 2016. As part of the COP-22 in Marrakesh, a Low Emissions Solutions Conference will highlight the key role ICT can play to both mitigate greenhouse gas emission and help the world adapt to climate change.

Significant progress on Standards and synergy with other initiatives

In the October 2016 IEEE Communications Magazine, the President’s Page states that “ComSoc is leading the IEEE Initiative on Green Information and Communication Technologies (Green ICT) and the IEEE Standards Association is helping to support this initiative. To start with, we have had two very successful Rapid Reaction Standardization Activities on this topic, one in the UK last November, and one in Chicago this past June.
